Sam Lawson "Closer" interview

A must share for me. Video interview I did with Sam Lawson (Select) for Boys by Girls book Closer. He is such a sweetheart. Watch it and you'll see what I mean. Not only is he an incredible model, he also does boxing, sings when drunk and makes a good cup of tea.

"Closer" is available to buy here.

PS. He promised to marry me by the time he hits 21. That makes me sorted then. Irresistable charm, sexy tattoos AND a lifetime of never-ending Oasis quotes. How can a girl resist...

Why We Do The Things We Do

Last year was hard. It was also full of amazing moments beyond what I thought I'd achieve last year!

This year has barely started, and it is already full of new challenges and new people to inspire me. To all the people that have shown support and continue to show your support for me and my work, a big warm thank you to all! I am full of hope, optimism and inspiration to let 2012 unfold it's mysteries and surprises.

I often get a lot of questions around my work. Why the focus on boys? Why the young boys and not men? I think that's a tale for another time, as I will probably go on for a while, and it requires me to go to a deeper place and possibly have a glass of wine or three. The fact is that if I had more time to shoot, I would be exploring a whole lot more areas, but with so limited time to shoot, it's easy to focus my energy on where my passion truly lies. I have realised a lot lately that each and every boy I shoot that let me into their personal journey, inspire me in a different way and helps my work grow. I want to thank those boys cause without you and your awesome energy I wouldn't be doing this. So thanks to Micky for making me more excited about ice-cream than I have been since I was 5, to Sebastian for letting me experience the awesomeness of the Sauve, to Yuri for being the coolest thing to walk this planet, to Tom for being Tom, to Matthew for embracing my own quirkiness, to Sean for being far too nice for his own good, to Alex for lifting me up when I need it and to Simon for opening this door for me in the first place. And a thank you to everyone else that I have shot that invested your time and energy into achieving wicked images with me. You are all my little heroes.

Why do we keep pushing ourselves to the limits to keep getting better, keep growing and keep reaching higher and higher? Why do we make too many sacrifices to achieve our goals? And why do we keep shooting till we drop and edit till early morning hours? Because we hope that in the end it will all be worth it. Or perhaps because we are all just stubborn little fuckers. My photographic journey is always coloured with my own experiences, and often a way to express any sadness or joy that happens in my life. It gives me a sense of relief. For every image I produce that I am truly happy with, or for every editorial I shoot that brings me proudness, it's like a piece in my puzzle of self falls into place.

Like a very inspiring woman recently told me "keep marching to the beat of your own drum". As the new year starts I have a new leap of faith, a virtual push in the back you might say, to keep going no matter what, and that hard work and belief in self will eventually lead to greatness. Most importantly the people I work with is a big driver in my work, and it's those small moments of understanding or mutual total admiration, and the images this leads to, that reminds me that that in itself is worth it all. So no matter what this year brings, I'm ready to keep marching, and keep adding pieces to my puzzle.

Jason Wilder for Boys by Girls

Another treat New York provided me with was Jason Wilder at New York Model Management! By looking at my own images again, I already feel like I want to shoot him more... like now!!! Why is he not in London? But that aside, I had a wonderful shoot (although super hot day!) by the Brooklyn bridge with young Wilder. Some models and photographers work together very effortlessly, and for me Jason was one of those models where it just flowed. He has that look that I adore, he was sweet as a bunny, had a great positive aura about him and adapted to how I wanted him to pose almost without me saying it. Adore, adore, adore!

Wonder pieces from the Ninh and Janet Zheng collection, brought in by stylist Kita Updike, and the wonderful Mauricio on hair. If I could clone Mauricio for my London hair styling needs I would! London needs more hair stylists like him, plus he brings this magic calm to a shoot. One just wants to walk over and hug him at random moments. The wonderful Alex Margary from www.metrovelvet.com was also at my shoot to help out and say hello as he's someone I've stayed in touch with for our general passion for menswear and fabulous male models. Good times.

Closer to Helge Johansson

These are the shoes and legs of Helge Johansson. He lives in Stockholm and is signed with Kid of Tomorrow there. I had the pleasure of shooting this amazing boy for Boys by Girls book "Closer", which made me come back to London optimism and belief that there are good people around.

This boy has dreams enough for all of us, and with his faith that the world is full of good things, it's hard not to feel uplifted after spending hours with Helge in Swedish coffee shops and cafes.

Closer to Jordan Taylor

With his amazing angelic look, Jordan was a must for me to capture for Boys by Girls book, "Closer". But underneath there is substance and a buckload of personality. My day with Jordan was fab, and resulted in a series of images we both felt represented "Jordan". I can't wait to capture more of Jordan!

Harry Uzoka for Boys by Girls

There is something so magic about Harry at M+P. He has this powerful strength, yet at the same time an amazing softness and vulnerability. The location I used in the images below has lights in the ceiling, so the model has to be aware of the light differently as it hits their face and body, and Harry's ability to play with light is amaze. Instead of my usual "don't forget the light is above you", he flowed away into his own so I could just shut up and shoot a series of beautiful portraits. Just magic. Thank you Harry.

Keith Hernandez for Boys by Girls

When I missed out on shooting the stunning Keith Hernandez (Elite / Request) back in September during my trip to New York, I did some wishful thinking that the opportunity to shoot with him would come again soon. Lucky for me it did during his recent London visit!

We took to the streets of Battersea, exploring Keith's urban Bronx side and mixing it in with a dash of urban London (including the iconic Battersea Park powerstation in one of our shots). Ever the charmer, Keith delivered some gorgeous images in a Boys by Girls series called "Crossing Echoes". Check out images here or by clicking the image below.

Pin Up Boys Volume 2

With four boys in volume 2 of Pin Up Boys, I am of course going to be a little biased and say that this is a fab issue!

Misa Patinszki (M+P), Sam Bennett (Storm), Thomas Tollstedt (Zone) and Denis (D1) were all fabulous and stunning as they posed to perfection for this very cool publication. To get your own copy of this issue you can do that here. Grooming for Misa below, Eimear Sweeney.

Could someone make one of those greek statue looking like things of Misa please?

Closer to Simon Jennings

Many of you will recognise Simon if you have been following my work for a while, so it won't come as a surprise that young Jennings has his story in the second Boys by Girls book "Closer". For my insights on Simon and his story, his 6 page spread in the book will be worth a read/view.

There is something so incredibly beautiful about that stage between boy and man, and I've been able to be part of Simon's journey for the last two years. These images are some of my most beautiful yet of this boy in my eyes, as I captured him as him in this intimate portrait series.

Jed Texas for Boys by Girls

Finally had a chance to shoot with the stunning Jed Texas at Elite! He fulfilled every expectation I had, and I was finally able to include him in the list of boys on our Boys by girls project. Phew!

Beautifully styled by Jennivi Jordan (assisted by Mary Ferreras), and with hair styled by Karin Kratzeisen, Jed and I got to do the fun camera thing we like to do as model and photographer. Jed is so wonderful in bringing his personality into a shot, and is so tuned in to getting the best result together with the photographer. A joy of a shoot, and hopefully there will be some more in the future with this stunning charmer.

Photograpic assistant Priscilla Ratola, who failed to deliver hot towels to Jed. Ok so she didn't really, that would have been a miracle. Click here or the image below to see the full image series.

Boys by Girls "The Gentlemen"

This shoot was definitely a fun one to do! With three stunning and charming boys Igor (Select), Guetan (D1) and Raymond (M+P) there was enough energy and charm on shoot to last me for weeks! Wearing their own clothes and hanging in their local area, there were giggles, a playground and plenty of biscuits.

Alexis Day (using Dermalogica & Label M haircare) provided beautiful grooming, and Piera Catalano was my lovely assistant and took some super behind the scenes shot which will be shared soon on www.boysbygirls.co.uk.

Closer to Misa Patinszki

This particular shoot was an experience to say the least! First of all I had to travel to Budapest to get anywhere close to young Patinszki, so I was in a new country, with new people, stuck in a very tiny hotel room. Little did that matter, as my day with Misa to shoot him for the second Boys by Girls book "Closer" was an experience to remember in years to come.

He welcomed me into his home with freshly baked breakfast made by his lovely mum, and we captured a beautiful series of images of him in his house and garden. He later took me to his local kayak club, where he trains a lot and is the reason he is so fit. Image below is amongst some colour kayaks. Being a refresh and polite, young gentleman, I left Hungary wishing the boys at home was a little bit more like that.

Mikhael Ayoub & Alex Ciappara at Request for Boys by Girls

Next to Mr Yuri, this shoot was definitely one of my fave I did in New York!

Some shoots just hits you with inspiration, and instead of feeling drained from energy and resort to the usual laying flat on the floor to stretch back and complain of heavy lifting you might have needed to do, you end up feeling revitalised, inspired and wanting to do the shoot all over again! This was one of those shoots, because I simply had such a good time. Both Mikhael & Alex were lovely boys, and Micky (I'm gonna move to nickname basis for Mikhael, as he prefers this) in particular such a character. One can only hope that everyone at some point in their lives get to meet someone like Micky.

His incredible amount of positive energy was simply so impactful (even more than Samuel at Oxygen when he gets to go to Winter Wonderland to see Christmas stuff), that I left the shoot with a newfound love for New York and a new model to convince the rest of the world or his amazingness. For making me feel like an excited child on Christmas day just over some icecream, I give him a massive ten points.

Check these colourful images to get a feel for the wonderfulness of my shoot with these boys.

Closer to Matthew Bell

Matthew Bell at Elite has been a busy bee after he started modelling, winning Elite Model Look 2011 earlier this year. I've had the pleasure of shooting him a few times now already and he is definitely turning into one of my new muses. Matthew has that special little something that you can't teach someone, and he commits fully to the shoot and connects in quite a rare way with what you as a photographer is trying to do.

This time I shot him for our Boys by Girls book Closer, and this shoot in particular was special as it was all about capturing the core of Matthew. One of his passions is music, which we manage to incorporate subtly, and hopefully I also manage to capture and share my view of why he is so unique in his series of images in the book. As Matthew says "A tree challenge is the holy grail of challenges", and during our shoot we manage to find a tree that made us both ridiculously happy. How he got up there I have no clue. But I adore him a little more for doing so.

"Semper Fidelis" in The Ones 2 Watch

To end the year off perfectly the lovely people at The Ones 2 Watched published my editorial with Misa & Egor at Elite "Semper Fidelis". Styling: Tana Gayle-Reveault. Grooming by Eimear Sweeney. Photographic assistant Priscilla Ratola.

For this story we went for an old uniform vintage vibe, perhaps to bring in that cool vintage vibe for our models to play with, or just because we like seeing guys in a uniform! Nobody is blaming me you say? Click here to visit The Ones 2 Watch and see the full editorial.
